My Life as a Human

(Separate from Work)

I love kids and animals, reading entertaining fiction, learning about whatever crosses my path that is interesting, helping people, lake kayaking, biking, walking and meditating.  I love traveling and have done a fair bit of it.  My kids have become good adult humans with careers, great spouses and have given me three lovely little grandchildren, one more on the way.

I have a wonderful husband I have spent the last 22 years with.

We have a dog, two cats, two horses, two llamas, four goats and five chickens.

      Working with my mind

My personal approach to many life issues and situations is to learn what I can and then actively apply what I learn.

While working on my B.A. I took a linguistics course in which I studied a hypothesis stating that the language we speak, and form concepts with, shapes our view of the world.  This shocked me into realizing our thoughts and beliefs are not reality, they are just thoughts and beliefs.  They color and shape how we view everything.  I believe the structure of our language does affect our perception of the world.  I will dive into this further in an upcoming blog.

Meditation was my first mental exploration tool.  It has been a profoundly helpful practice, even though I have been an off and on meditator.  After over 25 years of doing various meditation practices I can easily click back into it and obtain results. A few years ago I trained to be a HeartMath Resilience Facilitator and found a few of their practices to give the results I found in longer meditations, in less time.  I now use HeartMath  whenever I have les time, or, sometimes, during the first 5 minutes of one of my other meditation practices.

I have used everything I’ve learned on myself and have been attracted to studying certain kinds of things because of the self-critical, negative mind states  creating massive inner stress that were my internal base as a young adult.  I can honestly say now,  using  these techniques, including meditation has worked!    My mind tends to be mainly in the present moment, appreciating what is.

When it veers off into negative commentary, I am able to catch it and bring it back.

Besides degrees and trainings and levels of experience in working with others, all of which I have, it is the work I have done with my own mind that qualifies me to do this work with others.

From my wonderful friends and family I have learned  that love is both a noun and a verb, meaning it is something we need to actively do to create more of it.  Loving the people around us is an active practice of acceptance, appreciation and helping them go for what is best for them.  This is an important piece of what I like to bring to my work as well as life.
